All She Wants For Christmas…is to Ride Her Bike

At  this time of year most 11 year old children are thinking of what toys, games, gift cards and other surprises Santa will bring them on Christmas.
And their biggest medical concerns are bumps, bruises, cavities, and maybe a broken bone. But for one Lyman Gilmore student that is not the case this year. All she wants to do is ride her bike. 11 year old Shaylee Sanderson is recovering from brain surgery for the second time in her young life. The first time was in 2008- Shaylee was playing and complained of a really bad headache- mom took her to the emergency room.

Shaylee was taken by ambulance immediatley to Sutter Sacramento ICU followed by nine and a half hours of brain surgery.

Amazingly enough, Shaylee recovered from her surgery and treatment and was eventually able to return to school and has been active and monitored regularly. Everything was going well until this November.

Shaylee underwent another four hours of surgery just before Thanksgiving. This time doctors say she needs another 30 radiation treatments followed by 4 cycles of chemotherapy.  Those treatments are scheduled to begin on December 17.
Unlike many residents in the county that have a network of friends or business contacts that can help assist in times of need- Shaylee’s mom, Shelly Anderson, is a single parent of two girls that is currently unemployed and lucky to have medi-cal to cover major costs. But it’s the other expenses that Shelly is struggling to meet.

With no spaghetti feed or silent auction taking place, Shelly and Shaylee have placed three donation cans in businesses that are in their neighborhood.- the Station House Store on East Main Street, Smiley Guys Smoke House on Joerske Dr, and KNCO Radio Station in the Holiday Shopping Center on East Main and Dorsey Dr.

Shaylee has an amazingly good spirit having gone through so much. She says she is happy, and like most kids says she is glad to not have to do too much homework right now. And for Christmas she has simple wishes….
