California state legislators are attempting to draw a line between Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol and Driving Under The Influence of Drugs. Though the Bill, SB 289, may sound good on paper, Americans for Safe Access- Nevada County representatives believe the bill unfairly targets recreational and medicinal marijuana users. ASA-NC Chair, Patricia Smith, explains the issue with the bill.
Of additional concern to Smith’s organization is the fact that The California Sheriff’s Association is in support of the bill.
Smith says ASA-NC is starting an email campaign to Senator Correa explaining the concerns and is also following the national movement o introduce similar legislation in other states. A similar bill has been introduced in Colorado several times, but has been defeated each time because of what Smith refers to as the bad science used in the detection of marijuana.
SB 289 has been referred to the Senate Public Safety Committee for review.
