Bear Killed in Highway 20 Accident

A bear ran into the path of a motorist on Highway 20 Saturday night. CHP Public Information Officer Marc Morrison says a 45 year old Penn Valley man was near Washington Road when a black bear ran directly into the west bound lane. Officer Morrison says the 2008 Chevrolet hit the bear. Officer Morrison says the driver did the right thing by not swerving.

“As hard as it is to strike an animal like that, it likely averted further problems or injuries which often happen when people try and swerve out of the way and subsequently go off the road, hit trees and so forth.”

The bear died at the scene. The driver was not seriously hurt; but his car received significant damage. Officer Morrison is cautioning drivers, because of the large numbers of animals moving throughout the local area, driving defensively is very important.
