Big Rig Catches Fire on 80 Near Colfax

A Big Rig fire closed interstate 80 near Colfax just before 4 am yesterday morning. Sgt. Kevin Pierce with the Gold Run CHP office says the trailer of the truck carrying non toxic medical supplies was a total loss.

“The driver noticed that the truck was smoking to the point where he thought it was going to catch on fire and it eventually did. So he was able to safely get over to the shoulder and the slow lane and separated his tractor from his trailer and a fire ensued, burning up most of his load.”

The fire originated in the brakes of the truck while traveling the steep downhill grade, westbound on 80. The highway was closed for about 45 minutes for the safety of fire crews responding. One lane was opened to traffic as cleanup continued, with all lanes open by 7 o’clock this morning.
