Cedar Ridge Men Arrested for Attempted Extortion

Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 2 Cedar Ridge men after they attempted to extort $2,000 dollars from their land lord. Sgt. Bill Smethers with the Nevada County Sheriff’s office explains the unidentified landlord had two renters living in a trailer on his property that he was looking to evict. The pair, identified as 42 year old Cameron Gatewood Robertson and Clifford Cousins age 50, threatened to turn the land owner in for building violations if he did not give them $2,000 by the end of the year. That is when the landlord called the Sheriff’s department.

“At that point, the deputies contacted the detective. What they did is they set up a reverse sting, get a pretext phone call to set up a meeting and the victim was supposed to show up with the $2,000. The subjects arrived on scene and that’s when they were arrested for extortion.”

Deputies have a potential third suspect, a female believed to be Robertson’s girl friend who was not taken into custody but charges still may be filed against her in addition to the charges of suspicion of criminal conspiracy and extortion filed against both Robertson and Cussins.
