The Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County is celebrating the positive in our community found in the results of a recent California Healthy Kids Survey which showed most Nevada County teens are choosing not to drink alcohol or use drugs. Project Director Ariel King Lovett says 72 percent of Nevada County teens said they did not drink alcohol in the last 30 days which is how the question was asked on the survey. She says the figures were even higher for non use of marijuana.
“Also, most Nevada County teens choose not to use marijuana. In that one, 81% of youth surveyed in 7th, 9th & 11th grades have not used marijuana in the last 30 days.”
Coalition members learned at a recent training about their Science of the Positive by focusing on growing a culture of positive, healthy attitudes and behaviors, a community can improve health and reduce substance abuse.
The survey also found there is a dramatic increase in the percent of 9th and 11th graders hearing the message about alcohol and other drugs from their parents and from the media, compared to just two years ago. Youth report talking to their parents increased from 39 percent to 67 percent and hearing the message from the media increased from 15 percent to 89 percent from 2007 to 2010.
