Copper Thieves Targeting Local Businesses

Copper thieves are targeting local businesses and churches, and a Nevada County government building . Facilities Program Manager Tom Colburn says the thefts were found at the HEW Building on Willow Valley Road.

“We had two air conditioning units that sat outside the old elections part of the building at the HEW and somebody came in and removed all the copper tubing out of the condensing units.”

Grass Valley Police Captain Rex Marks says a number of copper thefts have been reported to his department. The Captain said several of the thefts were from area churches. The Captain said the price of recycled copper is high.

“The big concern, at this point, of course is the economy and its current condition has prompted greater attention and value to the presence of copper and the fact that people are attempting to recycle that copper for cash.”

Law Enforcement is asking business owners to be extra vigilant with their outside equipment and report any suspicious activity.

The Captain said area churches are targeted because of no one is around at night. The repair of the equipment can cost thousands of dollars.
