Fire Safe Tips for Home Heating

Winter is here!  No matter where you live, winter brings a change in weather and a time to think about home-heating safety.

CalFire Public Information Officer, Daniel Berlant, says improper use or poorly maintained heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires and home fire deaths across the country.

Fire place safety is also an issue as some residents do not properly store or dispose of ashes and embers.

And of course Christmas trees are beautiful- but they can also become a fire hazard if not located in a safe area.

Also, make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
Never use your oven to heat your home.
If using fossil fuel heating, install and maintain carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning.
Make sure your home has working smoke alarms as well.

Couldn't agree more with you, Paul. Although we know heating systems are very safe and strategically cost-effective to our homes, statistics prove that they, too, have caused some fire accidents. Well, actually whatever is paired with recklessness is a potential hazard. Good thing though you have provided an array of DO's and DON'Ts. Thanks for this!
