Members of the Freed Independent Living Center in Grass Valley would like to see a change to the Social Security Act definition of “disabilty” as used to award SSI and Disability Insurance benefits. Freed Disability Community Advocate Justin Harford says it hasn’t been changed since the 1950’s*
Harford, says the way social security disability is written discourages people with disabilities from ever seeking employment. He says they see it all the time in their clients.*
Harford says the fact is that people with disabilities can hold a variety of professions, from upper management, to entry-level, but the SSA’s definition of disability does not take this into account.*
Freed Center for Independent Living recently submitted a resolution to the National Council on Independent Living to advocate for employment incentives for people with disabilities by changing the Social Security Act definition of “disability”.
