Furniture by Thurston Shuts Down in Grass Valley

A manufacturing company that has been in operation for 24 years in Nevada County shut down operations this morning leaving nearly 50 employees without jobs.  Furniture By Thurston with plants in the Whispering Pines and Loma Rica Business Parks is dark today.  General Manager Dan Slaton says he was notified late last night by corporate Headquarters in Texas that a Bank Shutdown had taken place.

“At approximately 11:30 p.m. last night the bank ordered our sister company KLN Furniture  in San Antonio to cease operations upon further review.  Consequently that effects us as they control all the business end of what we do.”

Furniture by Thurston was a localy owned business for 20 some years when it was purchased by KLN Steele Production of San Antonio, Texas in November of 2007. Furniture by Thurston specialized in commercial furnishings for the Military and Universities and Colleges. At one point the company had 75 employees in Nevada County. This morning Slaton says he notified the company’s now 45 employees that operations were being shut down and they were out of a job.

“It’s been 24 years that I’ve been here and it’s been a good strong business we had a viable product and  hopefully something will come of this that we can move forward in the future.”

One of Furniture by Thurston’s local vendors told KNCO News this morning that his company has  made parts for Furniture by Thurston since 1995. Don Kreinick says Furniture By Thurston owes  his company   $17,000.
