A child forcibly taken by his grandmother was injured as the two fled through the brush Tuesday afternoon. Nevada County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Shannon Moon says the incident started as a family disturbance. The Grandmother did not like the way the child was being cared for and forcibly took the child. The Lieutenant says the grandmother had no rights for custody.
“After the investigation, the four year old child was located and was fine, but he did have some minor injuries, some scratches and such to his legs from running through the brush with his grandmother. He was taken by force. There was an altercation at the residence. He did not want to leave. The grandmother did take the child.”
Lieutenant Moon says almost every law enforcement agency in the county responded to search for the child the moment the incident was reported. 50 year old Wanda Cowan was taken into custody for suspicion of violation of a child custody order and child endangerment. She was found at the Social Services office in Nevada City. She had apparently convinced a neighbor to give her a ride out of the area, before law enforcement could get a perimeter set up. Cowan remains in the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility awaiting arraignment.
