Grandmother Arrested for Kidnapping After Family Dispute

Law Enforcement is breathing a sigh of relief after a four year old child was found safe following family member abduction.   Nevada County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Shannon Moon said there had been some type of family dispute at a home on Juniper Way off Idaho Maryland yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon. The initial report said the grandmother forcibly took the four year old and ran out the back door and into the woods. Lieutenant Moon said they were still trying to determine what occurred.

“It was a family disturbance between the grandmother, her biological daughter and a niece that her daughter had in custody. They were arguing over some type of parental behavior. The grandmother forcibly took her granddaughter and left on foot in the area. We were concerned about the four year old child being out there on foot in the wooded area.”

Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney, and Grass Valley Police and search dogs fanned out throughout the area. After over an hour information was received that 50 year old Wanda Cowan was at the Social Services Department at the Eric Rood Center. Investigators took custody of the four year old and Cowan was arrested for kidnapping and child endangerment.
