A driver suspected of DUI and Hit and run crashed his subaru Putrback wagon southbound on SR 174 near Pine Hill Drive south of Grass Valley shortly after 1 o’clock Saturday morning w . 59 year old Stephen Zimmerman of Grass Valley allowed his vehicle to drift to the right and off the roadway where it struck a PG and E utility pole. The vehicle continued off the road where it struck several parked trailers and crashed through a carport on the side of a residence. Power lines were broken during the impact with the utility pole, causing live wires to fall onto the west road edge and start a fire.
A CHP vehicle patrolling the area happened upon the collision less than a minute after it occurred finding the Subaru still off the edge of the road and seeing Zimmerman seated inside.
CHP closed the highway due to the fire burning and power lines down and began walking a safe path back to the Subaru to contact Zimmerman, However, before they could reach him, Zimmerman fled in the vehicle southbound on State route 174.
Once Fire Department personnel and additional law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, CHP personnel located Zimmerman by following evidence left on the roadway from his severely disabled vehicle which was missing the right front tire. He was ultimately located at his residence. Further investigation revealed Zimmerman was driving under the influence of alcohol, causing the collision. He was arrested and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on charges of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of a collision.(Hit and Run)
