On Sunday afternoon, August 14th, about five minutes after 3 o’clock, a traffic collision occurred on Interstate 80 near Newcastle that killed the driver and sent her 4 year old son to the hospital. CHP officer David Martinez says there was a tow truck on the shoulder of the road assisting a driver of a pickup truck when a Service Patrol tow truck pulled behind them and put on the caution lights to alert oncoming traffic. For an unknown reason, the woman, who was driving a 2003 Honda Civic westbound west of the Newcastle Road overcrossing, swerved into the shoulder area.
“What we do know is that she was initially in the slow lane, the far right lane, and then it looks like she just kind of drifted off onto the right shoulder; and it sounds like, right before the impact, she swerved quickly to the left and that’s why she hit the left rear of the tow truck and then spun out of control still on the shoulder and hit the other truck that was in front of it.”
Amy Keith, a 32 year old from Auburn was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 4 year old boy who was seated in the center back seat of the Honda sustained injuries and was taken by Cal Star to UC Davis Medical Center. The CHP is still conducting witness interviews and have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
