Some local children got to go “back to school” shopping Monday morning with a $100 dollar gift certificate, thanks to the Gold Country Kiwanis. Past president of the club Cal McKitrick says the students are nominated for the program through the local schools and Monday morning 45 youngsters 6th grade and younger got to shop for clothes at KMART.
McKitrick says many volunteers contribute funds and show up the morning of the shopping spree to help coordinate.
Kiwanis also raises funds throughout the year to help other local non-profits, like the Kare Crisis Nursery and the Women of Worth. Kiwanis also operates the Kiwanis Family House at UC Davis to provide a low-cost place to stay for families with children receiving care at UC Davis.
Last year 28 families from Nevada County used the Kiwanis Family House at UC Davis while their children were hospitalized for treatment.
