Marijuana Thefts Increase

Law enforcement is seeing a increase in the number of reported theft of marijuana. Nevada County Sheriff’s Sergeant Bill Smithers says they are seeing more theft now that the crop is maturing. The months of September and October are the prime harvesting months when the marijuana has reached its peak.

“It’s that time of year. It’s getting close to harvest season, the weather’s changing and the outdoor season is coming to an end and usually this time of year, we see an increase in thefts of medical marijuana from different gardens where people are getting into backyard or breaking into green houses and stealing the medical marijuana.”

The Sergeant says there will always be people who would rather steal the marijuana than take the time and effort to grow it. A number of cases in recent years have lead to death or serious injury involving the theft of marijuana.
