Off Duty Firefighter Finds Car Down Embankment

A North San Juan Fire Fighter found two men seriously hurt in a car accident early Monday morning. CHP Officer Jason Barnthouse says the fire fighter found the car as he was returning home after responding to another emergency call. Officer Barnthouse says the fire fighter had traveled the road two hours before and not seen the accident.

“We received a call from a firefighter who happened to be driving his vehicle through the area and noticed the headlights facing toward the roadway. The vehicle was down off the roadway approximately 35 feet, and from what the firefighter saw, sustained major damage to the roof.”

Two men in their mid twenties were in a 2000 VW sedan. One man was from North San Juan and the second from Auburn.  Both suffered serious head injury and were taken to Sierra Nevada Hospital. A helicopter was called for because of the injuries, but none was available. Officer Barnthouse says a number of fire arms were found at the crash site. The driver and passenger were reportedly heavily under the influence. The driver is now facing felony driving under the influence charges.
