Regional Broadband Grant Award

A regional Broadband grant has been awarded that will move Nevada County closer to the goal of expanding high speed internet access to rural areas.  Nevada County District 3 Supervisor Terry Lamphier sits on the Gold Country Broadband Consortium and says the Sierra Economic Development Corporation was awarded a one year $150,000 grant to launch a public-private partnership aimed at increasing digital access and use.

“We will now be through SEDCorps, received $150,000 and over a period of time, the total budget is over $450,000. So people have been wanting this. There are not going to be any miracles in the short term, but this is an important step.”

The consortium includes Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Sierra and eastern Alpine counties.  A full membership meeting is set for March 29th in Auburn to focus on planning a series of community meetings with internet service providers, businesses and residents to inform consumers and to solicit their feedback.
