Salvation Army Warming Shelter for Homeless to Open Tonight

With wind, cold weather and some precipitation in the forecast the Salvation Army in Grass Valley has decided to open the warming shelter tonight for homeless people. Salvation Army Major Martha Sheppard says they are located at 10725 Alta Street and will be ready for guests around 6 o’clock this evening. She also says they need volunteers to man the shelter.

“If you drive, the first shift would go around and post the flyers so the people that are homeless will know about it and then the later shift would actually go out and pick up some people. We go to spots in Nevada City and some of the camp sites that we know they’re at and then we need people to prepare food and just hang out and make sure there are no problems in the middle of the night. In the morning there’s breakfast and cleaning up.”

Volunteers can call them now to sign up for shifts or duties. The phone number to volunteer for the Warming shelter is 274-3500.   Low temperatures tonight are expected to dip into the 20’s.
