September has been proclaimed Adult Literacy Awareness Month through resolutions passed in Nevada City and Grass Valley and by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. Alan Archer is the Director of “Read UP” a popular literacy program that has been in the county for 30 years. He says people who have trouble reading usually missed out on developing those skills in the first Second and third grades for various reasons.

The Ready up program is free and confidential and pairs the student with volunteer tutors from around the county.
Often the skills gained through the Read Up Program can lead to a person gaining employment and self respect and more happiness in their lives.
Archer says volunteers can call the program at the Madelyn Helling Library to get more information. that phone number is 470-2772.
