Soroptimist Hands Out Awards

Soroptimist International of Grass Valley honored a number of local agencies, and offered scholarships to select groups and individuals as part of their awards dinner. The non-profit organization works to improve the lives of women and children on a local level as well as an international level. Groups recognized for their service include the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition, Women of Worth, Community Recovery Resources, The Newman Foundation, and Western Sierra Medical Clinic. Also honored was NEO, which stands for New Events and Opportunities. NEO’s Youth Outreach Coordinator Lynn Skrugrud says their mission is to empower young people to make healthy choices through positive alternative activities. In addition to the recognition, a cash award will go toward the goal of opening a teen center.
NEO just received their non-profit status and is just starting to fundraise for the center. Two vocational scholarships were also awarded to local high school graduates to assist with their continued education. You can find out more at  www.sigv.com
