Two serious accidents occurred on Nevada County roads over the weekend. One resulted in a fatality and in both accidents alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor. On Saturday morning about 8:45 a 25 year old man from Reno, Kenneth Leighton was driving a 1982 Honda dirt bike south on Auburn Road when he lost control of his bike and drifted into a rock. The bike overturned and ejected the rider who landed on his back in some rocks. Leighton suffered severe injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by CalSTAR paramedics. Leighton had been wearing a helmet but the CHP says it flew off upon impact.
Later on Saturday just before 6pm. a man driving his 1996 Toyota westbound on SR 20 just east of Little Creek Place allowed the vehicle to drift off the right portion of the roadway, overcorrected and slid off the eastbound shoulder. At some point the vehicle became airborne and impacted some boulders. 31 year old Rene Medina Jiminez of Oregon House was extricated from the vehicle and flown to Sutter Roseville Hospital with injuries to his back neck chest and right shoulder. Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision Jiminez was arrested and released to the hospital for treatment.
