The 49er Breakfast Rotary Club of Nevada County’s 20th Annual Gold Country Duck Races were completed yesterday and Bruce and Elizabeth Motley of Grass Valley were the $5,000 grand prize winners. The $1,000 second place winner was Naomi Bradfute, and $500 third place winner was Jeff Bogaczyk. The winner of the Sponsor/Beneficiary race was the Beam Easy Living Center, who donated their $500 winnings to Anew Day, a local nonprofit that provides counseling.
The Motley’s duck race ticket was the winner from over 8,000 tickets sold. Five heats of ducks floated down Deer Creek, with the top 40 ducks from each heat entered in the final grand prize race.
As its only annual fundraiser, the 49er Breakfast Rotary raises nearly $30,000 to support numerous community projects. Some of the recent projects include an animal show and care structure/outdoor amphitheater at Nevada Union High, remodeling and clearing at the YMCA Camp in Bear Valley, annual dictionaries and thesauruses to Nevada City fifth graders; remodeling of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ offices; repairing homes for FREED Center; and clean-up and repair of Litton Trail and Nevada County Land Trust trails.
