Seventh Grader Places at State Science Fair

Yesterday we told you about the Nevada County 7th Graders who had advanced to the State Science Fair competition at USC in Southern California after placing at the county level. Nine students from Nevada County were eligible and registered for the competition.  While all of them should be proud of their achievements, at least one student, Jonathan Petty from Clear Creek School, won Fifth Place and Honorable Mention in the Junior division Alternative Energy Category, after having taken second at the county level.

Nevada County Science Fair Coordinator, Dan Dummett, says our kids are up against a lot of competition.

Jonathan Petty’s project looked at the temperature of solar panels and how that effects their efficiency.  Mr. Dummett says having Jonathan place at the State level also validates how the  Nevada County  judges are selecting projects to advance in the competition.

The Local Science Fair rewards students with gift certificates to the Bookseller in Grass Valley and the Engineers Association of Nevada County, and the Clean Power Cooperative also provide incentive rewards to students for their achievement at the Science Fair.
