The Vallejo man charged with a criminal rampage in the town of Washington last month has been arraigned in a Nevada County courtroom and has entered a not guilty plea. Authorities say 28-year-old Jeffrey Caldwell stole a vehicle from his hometown and, after ditching it in Washington, stole two more vehicles in Washington and fired a gun a number of times, including toward a pedestrian and in a threatening manner toward another one. When he was arrested, he was facing two felonies related to vehicle theft and vandalism. But District Attorney Cliff Newell says his office has filed 8 felony charges. Newell says three of the charges are related to firearms, including assault with a firearm, which is Caldwell’s first “strike” offense. He says conviction of a “strike” charge results in much less credit for time served in prison, or from 50 to 15%.
