Nevada City has begun exploring options for encouraging the construction of more affordable housing. On Thursday, the Planning Commission will discuss a proposed ordinance from staff. Wolfson says that would double the maximum allowable units per acre to 16, which could either be apartments or small cottage-style homes. But developers would have to build at least 4 per half acre to qualify for the fee reductions…

Staff also recommends the prohibition of short-term rentals for cottage dwelling units and mandating energy-efficient designs. Wolfson says the commission would direct staff to come back with a draft ordinance with the specific wording. If the commission approves it, it would be sent to the City Council for final consideration. The Commission is meeting at 1:30 Thursday afternoon at City Hall.
