Airport to Get Million Dollar Wildlife Fence

The Nevada County Airport is going to have a fence put around it, but not necessarily to keep *people* out…

Listen to Steve Monaghan

Nevada County Chief Information Officer Steve Monaghan says the federal government is paying about a million dollars for the fence, with the airport fund having to chip in about ten percent. Airport Manager Lee Ocker says the fence won’t go around the perimiter of the airport, just to keep deer away from the runway…

Listen to Lee Ocker

Ocker says a CalFire tanker struck a deer in 2007, and in 2014, a tanker pilot went into a skid to avoid a deer on the runway. Pilots also routinely have to do a low approach before landing to scare deer away, which costs time and fuel while trying to fight a fire. Construction will be done in two phases, and will start in the spring.
