Another County Considers Laura’s Law

Yolo County is exploring options for implementation of Laura’s Law to provide treatment for individuals with a history of violent behaviors combined with mental health issues. A group of mental heath and legal experts from Nevada County, the only county to implement Laura’s Law, responded to a request from the Yolo County Mental Health Director to facilitate a training in Woodland. Michael Heggarty from Behavioral Health, Carol Stanchfield with Turning Point, and Superior Court Judge Tom Anderson provided two presentations in April.

The intent of the presentations was to clear up misconceptions about implementation and answer questions about the intent of Laura’a Law.
Laura’s Law was developed in response to the tragic shooting of Laura Wilcox, a 19 year old receptionist at Nevada County Mental Health in 2001. If Yolo County moves forward, they will be the second county in California to implement Laura’s Law.
