A man referred as the “archbishop” of a Nevada City spiritual organization is among seven people indicted by Federal authorities in an 8-million dollar mortgage fraud scheme. Prosecutors say 57-year-old John DiChiara headed an organization named Shon-te-East-a, Walks with Spirit, the mission of which was to help individuals by alleviating them of their home mortgages. None of the other suspects are from the local area. DiChiara and another suspect are alleged to have orchestrated a mortgage elimination program that fraudulently altered the title on residential properties, selling the properties, and receiving the sales proceeds. The suspects allegedly recruited homeowners into the program with the promise of relief from foreclosure and a share of the sales proceeds. They’re alleged to have sold 37 properties through the program and attempted to sell at least an additional 97 properties, obtaining profits in excess of 8-million dollars. But prosecutors say there was an attempt to extinguish in excess of 60-million dollars in legitimate mortgage loans.
