An arrest has been made in an animal cruelty case as a result of followup investigation by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Keith Royal says deputies returned to the Cruzon Grade property where 29 dogs had been taken into protective custody over the weekend.

Gary Perkins was subsequently arrested for animal cruelty and is being held on 10,000 dollars bail.
The rescue of now 31 dogs is leading to a costly effort for Sammies Friends to get the dogs ready for adoption. Cheryl Wicks who runs the county animal shelter and Sammies Friends says some of the dogs didn’t make it.

Wicks says the 14 puppies from the rescue will not need heartworm, but treatment for the other 17 dogs for heartworm could cost $5,000, and another $3,000 to have them spayed and neutered.

The puppies have been taken in by Pound Puppy Rescue and Wicks says most of the dogs are German Shepherd mix.

Wicks says Sammies Friends could use monetary donations to support efforts to get the dogs healthy and ready for adoption. She hopes to start placing them in a month or two.
