Locally, Cummings says most of the county is under an Extreme Drought. And that, by definition, also affects local livestock pasture and feeding, agriculture cycles, and irrigation timing and availability. It also influences local vegetation and wildlife, stressing it and potentially making it susceptible to disease. Supervisors Sue Hoek and Dan Miller were among Board members who approved the declaration with little comment…

A formal declaration enables the county to seek and utilize mutual aid, and obtain state and federal funds, if available. As of April 30th, the county’s rainfall total was only 47-percent of average. Governor Newsom made a similar proclamation on April 21st and the Nevada Irrigation District followed up a week later.
