Senior Firewood Program Getting Boost From Grass Valley

Grass Valley is repurposing wildfire fuel into firewood for local seniors and timber for small businesses, turning fire prevention efforts into a valuable community resource.
With colder nights not too far away, that means it will soon be wood-burning season for a number of Nevada County residents. And the Gold Country Senior Services Firewood Donation Program is getting a boost from Grass Valley’s wildfire prevention efforts. Community Risk Reduction Manager, Duane Strawser, says they’re turning wildfire wood fuels stock that are removed on a daily basis into a resource…
Measure B is the modest sales tax increase Grass Valley voters recently approved to fund prevention activities and help augment fire department staffing. Strawser says this will also reduce costs of such efforts, and also improve air quality…
Strawser says they’ll also be happy to provide lumber stock to small milling operations. He says in many cases this eliminates the city’s removal costs and provides valuable timber stock to be made into re-sellable wood products, helping generate revenue in the local economy.
