Tahoe National Forest Christmas Tree Permits Available

Tahoe National Forest Christmas tree permits are now available online for $12, offering an affordable way to enjoy the holiday while helping thin the forest to improve overall ecosystem health.

The Recreation Manager at the Nevada City Office, Mary Sullivan, says details about cutting areas, dates, and types of trees that may be taken down can be found through their Recreation-dot-gov website….

Sullivan says you need to bring your own cutting implement, such as a handsaw, as well as good tie-down material for your vehicle. And you should also check ahead and make sure the Sierra weather is adequate for making the trip…

The online permit price is only 12-dollars, much cheaper than what tree farms are charging these days. And fourth graders with an Every Kid Outdoors pass are eligible for a free tree permit and can apply by entering the pass or voucher number when purchasing a permit. Sullivan also notes that cutting a Christmas Tree improves forest health. The permit system helps thin densely-populated stands of small-diameter trees. Local experts identify areas that benefit from thinning trees that tend to be the perfect size for Christmas trees. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.
