The start time was changed because studies show teenagers need their sleep, and the early start time adversely affects behavior. Johnson says a recent study she read from schools that made a similar change saw that grades went up, depression went down, behavior problems went down, and teen car crashes went down. The local elementary school districts also start around 8:30. School started in Chicago Park on Monday. Students in the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School District began classes yesterday.
