Bay Area Man Arrested for Prescription Fraud

A suspect has been arrested for trying to purchase cough syrup containing codeine with fraudulent prescriptions. Grass Valley Police Sgt. Brian Blakemroe says they were alerted to the activity by a suspicious pharmacist at the Rite Aid pharmacy on Sutton way.

The SaveMart pharmacist had also received a fraudulent prescription from who was believed to be the same subject.

The suspect was identified as 19 year old Derrick Carral who listed his hometown as Lathrop, Ca.

It was determined that he had dropped off the prescription earlier in the day and he was taken into custody for prescription fraud. According to police the Cough syrup which contains codeine is mixed with soda and sweet candy to produce a drink known as Purple Drank.

Over the weekend Grass Valley police were notified that Placer County Deputies had also encountered people trying to fill similar prescriptions in the Lake Tahoe area.
