Bear River High School Recognized By State

Bear River is among 275 middle and high schools getting the Gold Ribbon Award from the state. It was created to honor schools in place of the Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assessment, accounability, and continuous improvement systems. Bear River was also five schools mentioned in the press release. Principal Amy Besler says it’s for their “Bruin Time” program that was developed to improve performance of struggling students. It’s a 41-minute period built into the school four days a week for tutoring and other interventions..

Besler says students seem to have most trouble adjusting to the stricter state standards for math and english. While the program has been around for quite a while, they’re now also offering a number of enrichments…

Also making this year’s list from Nevada County was Ghidotti Early College High School .
