Blue Shield Extends Policy Cancellation Deadlines

If you have health insurance through Blue Shield, and were notified that your policy would be canceled at the end of the year, you have just been given a three-month extension. The State Department of Insurance has announced an agreement with Blue Shield to allow customers to keep their individual and family policies through March 31. Deputy Insurance Commissioner Janice Rocco says Blue Shield sent out their cancellation notices too late.

Rocco says if you have Blue Shield and are about to lose your policy, you have two options.

Aetna and United Healthcare also will not be selling to new customers after the first of the year, but gave the required 180-day notice.
