Two agenda items focused on the Commercial Street Boardwalk will be addressed by the Nevada City City Council this evening. The first item is approval of a negative declaration from the City Planning Commission about the environmental impact of the Boardwalk. Boardwalk proponent and former city council member and mayor, Reinette Senum, says it sounds bad but is actually a good thing.

The second item is proposed extension of the Boardwalk Project. According to Senum, though the Boardwalk is a temporary structure, it is still has value and can continue to benefit the community.

One reason The Boardwalk was originally established was to address loitering, smokers, and pet owners that frequented Commercial Street but often blocked the sidewalks preventing tourists and residents from easliy moving along the sidewalks.
Senum acknowledges that not everyone is happy with the boardwalk, but according to survey data a majority of citizens are pleased.

Along with attracting an undesirable element, citizens against the Boardwalk also state the structure does not meet historical requirements of Nevada City and eliminates parking spaces on Commercial Street.
