The body of Sacramento City Firefighter William Porter was recovered from Camp Far West Lake yesterday afternoon, Yuba County Sheriff Steven Durfor said.
Porter, 57, of East Nicolaus, went missing on the evening of May 9th while fishing at the lake. Porter’s capsized kayak was found several hundred feet off shore. A massive search of the lake surface, shoreline and area surrounding the lake failed to locate Porter. During the ensuing twelve days the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department Boat Patrol and Search and Rescue teams led a concerted effort to find Porter.
During the operation teams from local, neighboring and state police, fire and rescue organizations participated in the search. Just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, sheriff’s department personnel were teamed with a private entity conducting a sonar search of the lake when they located Porter about 100 feet below the surface. The team used a remotely controlled device to recover Porter’s body and bring him to the surface.
An autopsy will be performed tomorrow to determine the cause of death.
