Briarpatch Co-op Market Goes Solar

BriarPatch Coop market has received approval to use its parking lot to collect solar energy to power the store. BriarPatch Co-op Marketing Manager Stephanie Mandel says yesterday (Tuesday) BriarPatch received Grass Valley Design Review Committee approval to install a 700 panel solar system directly over an expanded parking area.

It’s estimated the new solar system will provide more than 35 percent of the store’s electricity needs. A steel structure would support the photovoltaic panels, while shading a large section of the lot.

The parking area will also be expanded to create 44 more spaces. More parking has been a frequent request of Briarpatch shoppers who sometimes find the lot full. The project will also improve traffic flow as well as accommodating the solar system. BriarPatch Co-op was founded in 1976 and is celebrating it’s 40th year with special events. About 2,000 people a day shop at the market.
