Broadband Meetings Monday and Wednesday

Living in a sparsely populated area can present many challenges, and one of those problems in this day and age is internet access. The Sierra Economic Development Council, or SED-Corp, is holding some informational meetings this week for residents who have limited or no broadband internet service.

SED-Corp Chief Executive Officer Randy Wagner says his group is about midway through a three-year agreement with the California Public Utilities Commission to expand broadband service in rural counties. Geography, though, especially in this area, presents a big challenge.

There are solutions, such as satellite connections, but those can be very expensive. Wagner has invited residents and internet service providers to what he hopes will be a series of informational meetings. One is tonight at the North San Juan Fire District Community Center. For citizens living on Willow Valley Road and surrounding neighborhoods, there will also be a meeting Wednesday night at the Madelyn Helling Library’s Gene Albaugh Community Room. Both meetings are from 6 to 7:30pm.
