Brownouts Begin at Station 54

For the first time since before local fire agencies have worked under the Joint Operating Agreement, Nevada City’s fire station is closed. Today is the first day of a two-day brownout created after the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District pulled their three firefighters out of the station earlier this week. Station 2 is the busiest of the three stations. Station 54 averages about three calls per day–most of which are medical calls. Prestwich says the city is nearing an agreement to staff an ambulance at the station…

Prestwich wouldn’t say when that agreement is expected to be reached. Until Nevada City can secure funding for at least two more firefighters, the station will be open for four straight days, and then closed for two.
