Defendant Changes Plea in Sex Case

In a surprise turn of events, Nevada County District Attorney Cliff Newell announced today that defendant Ryan Christensen changed his not guilty plea to a plea of no contest to a Felony count of Sexual Penetration of a Minor.  The plea resolves charges that had been pending against the defendant since 2011, and came on the eve of a jury trial.

Newell says the victim’s parents were consulted prior to resolving the case. Sentencing is held over to January 10 of next year.

Had the DA been able to convince a jury of guilt on all counts the possible sentencing could have been more severe.

The change of plea keeps the young female victims from having to relive the horror by testifying in a trial.
