Control Burn Near Smartsville Gets Out Of Control

A control burn got out of control yesterday for Cal-Trans crews, which also resulted a brief voluntary evacuation advisory for about 15 homes. Public Information Officer John Hotchkiss says it was originally going to be a 200-acre training exercise on land at the University of California Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center, north of Smartsville. But it started to get out of hand as they started torching it…

About 180 acres have gone up in smoke, with 75-percent containment. Hotchkiss says there does not appear to be much potential for any further growth…

But full containment is expected on Friday.
