Even though it’s been cold during the night, temperatures have not dropped low enough for the Salvation Army to open their overnight warming shelter for the homeless. Lieutenant Sid Salcido with the local Salvation Army says they’ve been tempted, and pressured to open several nights this week, but their agreement with the county is they won’t open unless the overnight low is expected to drop below 32 degrees…
That agreement with the county has just been renewed until May of 2017, and part of it governs when Nevada City will open up…
Capacity at the Salvation Army is 21 guests, and unlike other shelters such as Hospitality House, they will take anyone, even if they have pets or are inebriated. Salcido says there were a few nights last year when they reached their capacity of 21.
