Craigslist Rental Scam Hits Nevada County

One person has lost hundreds of dollars in a rental scam conducted over the internet. Nevada County Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Powell says several calls have been received about people offering a home for rent, they do not own. The Captain says in one case a single mother rented a home and moved in only to find the person she sent seven hundred dollars for the first months rent did not own the home.

A neighbor to the newly rented home called the owner and found the victim had not rent the home from the legal owner. The suspects are finding a picture of a home on the internet and then listing the home for rent on Craigslist. The Captain says if the rent seems to low it probably is. Meet with the owner or the property manager. He says if you are a victim report it.
