Creating Communities Beyond Bias

Last Weekend the local group Creating Communities Beyond Bias presented a workshop to encourage a Community that supports and honors diversity in Nevada County. About 55 invited participants gathered at Peace Lutheran Church in Grass Valley to consider the question…What are the issues that prevent unity and encourage prejudice in Nevada County? Bill Drake is a member of the Creating Communities Beyond Bias group and explains how they got started.

Facilitator Teresa Langness says the groups split out at separate tables to define what areas of bias they have witnessed or they were concerned about .

The various task forces of the group are working on a series of initiatives over the next year to deal with issues.

Participants in the discussion included local law enforcement, County Librarian Laura Pappani and Nevada Joint Union  High School District Superintendent Louise Johnson , as well as members of the Nevada Union Social Justice Club, and  Sierra College students.  Drake says  the Latino and Native American cultures were also represented.
