Nevada City’s only fire station may be shutting down in a few weeks, at least temporarily. Station 54 shares staffing between the Nevada City Fire Department and the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District. Nevada County Consolidated announced in October that it would be pulling its firefighters out of Station 54 as a cost-cutting measure. City Manager mark Prestwich says even with a six month warning, that was not a lot of time to get a plan in place to fill those spots…
The city has applied for the state grant, but they won’t find out whether they’ll get it or not until June, and if they do get the grant, the funds to hire replacememnt firefighters won’t be available until October. Prestwich says he’s crossing his fingers…
Time is running out to come up with that plan. There is only one more scheduled City Council meeting between now and the April 19th date when Consolidated leaves Station 54. Prestwich anticipates that the fire station will have to close, at least on a part-time basis.
