DA Files Charges in Phoney Attorney Case

A woman who is charged with practicing law without a license in Nevada County  is also facing 15 felony charges for identity theft and embezzling money.   According to Assistant Nevada County District Attorney Anna Ferguson, 49 year old Sarah O’Neal operated “law” offices in downtown Nevada City and in Colfax . A citizen complaint in April 2012 prompted District Attorney Investigators  to examine O’Neal’s State Bar status.

Investigators found  divorces, property disputes and adoptions among other cases that were officiated  by O’Neil when she was not licensed to practice law. Case Records go back to January of 2010 to September of this year.   Assistant  D.A. Ferguson says 10 victims have been identified but she suspects there are more.

O’Neal  self surrendered through her attorney on November 2nd and is set for continued arraignment on November 15th at 1 pm in the Nevada City branch of the Superior Court.  the DA’s office encourages victims to contact Investigator Jeff Burgett at (530) 265-1301 for more information.
