It’s been in the works for years, and tomorrow it officially becomes a reality. The Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center near Truckee will open its doors, following a dedication ceremony. Bill Lindemann with the State Parks Department has been part of the long process of finding a site and getting the exhibits together. He says there are many exhibits—some feature the indigenous peoples of the area, there’s another one on transportation, and information and history on the ill-fated Donner Party, who tried to cross the Sierra in 1847…
The center also features a small theater where you can see video exhibits. The dedication is tomorrow from 11am to 2pm, and Lindemann says several dignitaries will speak and there will be a proclamation from the Town of Truckee…
To get there, take the first Truckee exit, turn right on Donner Pass Road into Donner Memorial State Park, where you will be directed to the Visitor Center.
